Autumn And Allergies

Dr. Dan Wisdom QuoteEveryday Wisdom: Autumn & Allergies

And just like that… autumn is on its way again. “Officially” it rolls in on September 22, but many of us are already feeling it. For a lot of folks (and their four-legged companions), fall brings more challenges than any other season — allergies that just seem to hang on and never quite go away.

If you’ve been with me for a while, you know what I always say: a holistic approach focuses on the cause, not the symptoms. And in my humble opinion, that’s where the real, long-lasting results come from. I’ve seen it work time and time again.

“Suppression means the symptoms may fade, but the problem is still there — often worse, and often reappearing later.”

Allergies need little explanation as to how they affect us or our companions — but how to fix them is another challenge entirely. Too often, the more we interfere with the body, the more the body has to handle and then get rid of.

Suppression vs. Support

The use of a single medication often leads to the need for stronger or even more medicine, whether we’re dealing with allergies or other challenges. Holistically speaking, that’s called suppression.

When it comes to allergies, the usual testing, desensitization, medications, or injections may be offered. Sometimes medication is even given without testing first. But in my experience, these drugs only give temporary relief. Even allergy tests often come back with allergens that can’t possibly be avoided — things like mold, pollen, or dust.

Nutrition First

In pets, a limited amount of relief can sometimes be seen with special allergy diets. For horses, it’s easier to try elimination-type feeding — and diet is important! Just changing from commercial feeds to simple oats can make a huge difference.

Providing nutrition through vitamins, minerals, herbs, oils, and more natural substances has definitely been better and far more lasting in my experience. There are two timeless formulas I’ve leaned on for years:

“These formulas are a great foundation, but they’re not the whole picture. What we avoid and what we provide day in and day out makes just as much difference as what’s in a supplement jar.”

Immune Support & Discharge

Support for the immune system is critical regardless of cause. Chiropractic, homeopathy, acupuncture, VOM, and laser therapy are also modalities that can trigger the body to start healing itself and hasten recovery… and yes, even with allergies.

By the time symptoms of allergies are apparent, the body is in a “discharge” mode. In other words, the body is trying to get rid of “something.” This may be through skin reactions, bowel movements, sneezing, or runny eyes. Inflammation is present as well, and inflammation can lead to serious lung issues.

Antioxidants, Oils & Omegas

Traditionally, antioxidants are just vitamin E and vitamin C. However, grape seed is a more natural and higher source of both. Many plant oils are good sources of natural vitamin E. For horses and pets I prefer cold processed, crude, unrefined soybean oil, Weight Check Oil that is GMO free. I recently made another good source available called Coco Check, and our Chia Seed are also a preferred supplement.

Any situation involving the skin needs fatty acids — and yes, even omega 6. Omega 6 helps the skin retain softness and, contrary to common belief, prevents inflammation alongside omega 3. A balanced complex of both is preferred.

Liver & Gut Support

The liver works like a fuel filter. When it’s “full,” junk overflows into the body — showing up in the skin, lungs, or even blood. Supporting the liver is critical. Quercetin, milk thistle, licorice, turmeric, aloe, chia seed, and psyllium husk can all help.

Don’t forget, for people, my REDOXX is proven to be tremendous for immune/defense support and liver support too.

The gut plays a role as well. Added enzymes, prebiotics, and probiotics support good bacteria and decrease bad. Herbs like ginger and astragalus help with inflammation, and clays like montmorillonite and bentonite are critical for detoxing and providing minerals.

Wrapping It Up

Over the years, I’ve learned that the more holistic the approach, the better the results — and the longer they last. Traditional methods often cover up symptoms, while holistic approaches help the body truly correct what’s wrong. And that’s what makes all the difference.

All the best,
